Neste Oil has been interested in implementing LED technology into the illuminating their petrol stations for several years. The Neste Oil Express station in central Oulu, Finland has had an ongoing pilot study since 2010, to gain experience in LED lighting. The station had 12 metal halide 250 W luminaires, half of which were replaced with Valopaa LED luminaires. The rest of the old lamps were soon replaced with Valopaa LED luminaires with intelligent features.
The amount of light increases to full power when a customer enters the meter field, and decreases again after the customer has left the area. The amount of light is also adjusted depending if the asphalt is wet, dry or snowy. Other features may be added to the intelligent system, e.g. timing and twilight switches. Furthermore, remote control over the Internet is also available.
The pilot study indicates that the development of LED technology has been rapid, and that the progress seems to have gone in the right direction. The lifespan of Valopaa products is long, achieving substantial energy savings. Adjustability and pre-programming are key features. Thus Neste Oil is able to provide their customers with a high-level customer experience as they visit the Neste Oil petrol stations.
The energy use of the fuel meter lighting has dropped by 50% compared to the old metal halide lights.
